The Mérida Cable Car, also known as the Mukumbari Cable Car, is the longest alpine passenger cable car system in the world. Winding along the Venezuelan Andes, it connects downtown Mérida and Pico Espejo. The system stretches 12.5 kilometers in total, with 5 stations and 4 operating sections. The starting station sits at 1,577 meters above sea level, while the terminal station reaches 4,765 meters, creating a relative altitude difference of 3,188 meters. Adopting double-cable technology, each cabin carries 36 passengers, and the full journey takes about 2 hours, crossing three climatic zones: tropical valleys, cloud forests and alpine tundra. First completed in 1960 and fully reconstructed and upgraded in 2016, it remains a classic example of global alpine cable car engineering. This cable car has been officially listed by LAWRENCE WORLD RECORDS CERTIFICATION as the “Longest Alpine Passenger Cable Car System”.
