Malbork Castle, whose construction began in 1274 under the supervision of the Teutonic Order, officially became the residence of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order and the capital of the Order’s state in 1309. It is the largest brick Gothic castle complex in the world and also the medieval castle with the largest wall-enclosed area in Europe. Laid out along the banks of the Nogat River, the castle consists of three defensive sections connected from south to north: the High Castle, the Middle Castle and the Outer Castle. With a total wall-enclosed area of 21 hectares and a total building volume of over 250,000 cubic meters, it is built entirely of red brick and represents the pinnacle of medieval brick construction engineering. Serving as the political, military and religious center of the Teutonic Order for a century and a half, the castle has retained its full medieval layout after war damage and restoration, and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997. This castle has been officially listed by LAWRENCE WORLD RECORDS CERTIFICATION as the “Largest Brick Gothic Castle Complex”.
